This canoe rental operation is conveniently located at Pulltite campground. We use their services for a few boats this weekend and had a great time floating on the current river. The water was crystal clear and cool on a hot August day – definitely don't miss the springs along the way as they are beautiful and extra cold! I gave this facility for stars only because the staff at the Pulltite concessions could have been a bit more friendly – I would think it's a pretty good life working at an operation like this, so a smile would go a long way. The boats were in pretty good condition – even though ours had a visible crack in the hall, we did not notice any water leaking. They had seat cushions and life preservers available for everyone as well. I would definitely recommend renting boats from here if you were staying at Pulltite campground as the location can't be beat.
I had a very disappointing, and hostile, experience with Current River Canoe, which also operates Carr canoe. I went to the office at the Pulltite campground and asked to arrange a shuttle ride from my take-out at Round spring. The older woman behind the counter said the only option at that time of day was to pay $40 and have someone drive my vehicle to the take-out. She handed me a very basic index card to fill out my vehicle info. I asked if the company's driver was insured. She became a little unsettled and said "no, but we've never had an accident". Of course, insurance is not for things in the past, but unforeseen things in the future. A younger driver was in the room and said, "yes, he has insurance" referring to the owner. So, I filled out the card, and put an asterisk at the bottom indicating that I was told that the company had insurance. I was totally polite about it, but the lady behind the counter was quite offended and became hostile. She ripped up the card and threw it in the trash and said "we're not doing business with you!". I asked if there was I manager I could speak with. She asked the overweight man slumped in the chair next to her what he thought. He laughed and said "I think you better get the hell outta here". I've can't remember a time I've been treated so rudely. It ruined an otherwise nice day with my family. I will never patronize this business again.
That said, the Current River's Cave Spring, which you can canoe inside of for about 30 yards, is not to be missed.
If you want to canoe the Current, don't start above Cedar Grove. This will allow you to avoid porting across a wide, low-water vehicle crossing above that point, and, there is not much to see above Cedar Grove anyway, along with low water at that point creating may times you will need to get out and drag your canoe across the low-water places.
Current River Canoe Rental at Pulltite is a great place to start your float trip, end it, or take a bathroom/snack break halfway through your trip.
Having canoed the nearly Jack's Fork, I would go there first. The massive dolomite overhangs there are much better than the more-open Current River.
We bring about 30 guys every year for the past 15 or more years. Highly recommend this family owned business.
The Current River itself is not what I expected. The December 2015 rains left many large trees lying across the river. Most have been cut to allow for passage, but a couple were only cut to allow a narrow six-foot-wide area. I had several near misses before fate caught up and I hit a cut tree and overturned, losing a couple of items.
Brooke Williams - 2 sides to every story. They're nothing but nice every time I've been there, would be curious to hear their version of your account & read their review of your attempted patronage
Current River (The business) is good, Current River (the river) is not good. The man running the business is personable and really helped me out by picking me up early when a surprise thunderstorm ruined my day of canoeing. A word of warning, the business is also labeled Carr's Canoe Rental. They have two locations on the river. So, if you have someone picking you up, double check which location they are waiting at.
There is no cellular service within 25 miles of the Current River, so plan accordingly.
Terry Barner - Dude, you gave the business a 1 star review because of the RIVER??? You DO know how reviews work, right? The business was accommodating, you said so yourself, they aren't responsible for your dissatisfaction with the river.
